THE TASK

The Silvertower in Frankfurt am Main is considered one of the most famous skyscrapers in Germany. From 1978 to 1990, the 166-meter tower was the tallest building in the country. It served as headquarter of the Dresdner Bank for three decades; after taking over the Dresdner Bank in 2009, the Commerzbank became the new owner and rented the building to the Deutsche Bahn (German Railways). Before the new tenant could occupy its offices in 2011, a comprehensive modernization was required to upgrade the building’s technology and energy efficiency.

THE DESIGN

A high-end publication, created by Q with images taken by architectural photographers Frank Marburger and Klaus Helbig, documents this complete renovation in the heart of Frankfurt. The distinguishing feature of the Silvertower – its rounded silver shape – is reflected on the cover by an illustrative reference, a jacket paperboard produced with silver ionics, a logotype refined with hot silver foil, and rounded corners. The inside spreads present impressive images from the building’s early days in the 1970s, followed by an extensive chapter documenting the challenge of the two-year renovation – from replacing façade elements to modernizing office space on 34 floors.
