Volkhardt Caruna Medien

Heinrich and the Oviparius Woolmilk Sow

Volkhardt Caruna Medien is a media company that provides solutions to all challenges in print production. But not enough people know that. Q developed ideas to support the company’s story.

Volkhardt Caruna Medien is a media company that provides solutions to all challenges in print production. But not enough people know that. Q developed ideas to support the company’s story.

THE TASK

In 1793, Heinrich Wilhelm Volkhardt founded a printing plant that is still owned by his descendants. Today, the activities of the Amorbach-based corporation are not limited to fabrication of premium print media: Volkhardt Caruna Medien creates prototypes, manages all phases of modern prepress and offset printing (for example, with saturated colors and hybrid half-tone procedures), produces small, personalized editions with digital printing machines, refines the printed materials, and provides packaging, storing, and logistics services. Our team has collaborated with this media house quite often, especially as a partner for creative production solutions outside the mainstream. But their broad range of services is not widely known. That’s why the owners asked Q to come up with marketing ideas.

THE SOLUTIONS

First, we created a mascot, the “Eierlegende Wollmilchsau”, literally translated as “Oviparius Woolmilk Sow”. This fabulous creature – which lays eggs and provides wool, milk, and pork – is a German synonym for an all-in-one object suitable for every purpose, just like the Swiss army knife – and just as Volkhardt Caruna Medien solves any pre-press and print related problem. The animal image appears on several media vehicles such as mailings, packaging stickers, and postcards. Its realization as one-color illustration enables various applications and recalls historic steel engravings as a reminder of the long tradition of the media corporation.

The Oviparius Woolmilk Sow also appears on the cover of a folder that includes cards explaining different print projects and decribing their specific challenges. All the cards display large photographs on the front side and detailed descriptions on the back side. Our folder concept allows the sales force to compile the cards individually before handing the file to prospective clients. The set of cards is updated with references to recent work on a regular basis.

As a seperate promotion tool to approach design and advertising agencies – who often are the decision makers in printing assignments – we created a customer magazine and named it “Heinrich” after the company’s founder. At frequent intervals, the publication provides information on additional benefits for both professional and personal interests. For example, sources of cost- and license-free stock images, color trends, an overview of new artists and exhibitions, removable gift- paper, or sharing generally understandable expert knowledge on the printing process. The Q team manages all editorial and visual work before delivering the printable “Heinrich” files to Volkhardt Caruna Medien.
