For the Hessian Ministry for Science and the Arts, Q created a status report that summarizes the ministry’s recent achievements.

THE TASK

Since early 2014, Minister Boris Rhein has been in charge of the Hessian Ministry for Science and the Arts. It subsidizes numerous academic initiatives to assure Hesse's sustainability and competitiveness, and advocates for cultural diversity in our region. Halfway through his term, which ends in late 2018, Q designed and produced an overview of the Ministry's activities.

THE CONCEPT

Big numbers are key visual elements of Q's design solution, as in the title: The shiny "2 1/2" stands for two-and-a-half years of brillant work. Almost every spread presents red figures, emphasizing the engagement of the Ministry. But not only Euro amounts are accentuated. The success of political activities is proven by other numbers as well. For example, Hesse provides 5,000 course offerings for dual students and provides a budget to maintain castle gardens and parks with an area of not less than 140 hectares. Consequently, even the pages introducing new chapters show large (page) numbers.

EDITORIAL DESIGN

After receiving the manuscripts and image files from the Ministry, we staged the brochure more like a magazine than an institutional report. Our layout is based on grand pictures, manageable volumes of text, superposed numbers, and interspersed quotes. The content communicates in a relaxed way, making the review of the ministerial activities an enjoyable experience.

Striking layout, colorful imagary, diversified design.
