HESSIAN STATE BALLET

For the love of dance

Since the ensemble was founded, the Hessian State Ballet has relied on Q for design expertise in all media.

Since the ensemble was founded, the Hessian State Ballet has relied on Q for design expertise in all media.

THE TASK

The Hessian State Ballet presented its premier performance in 2014. In Darmstadt and Wiesbaden, and beyond, it inspires fans of contemporary and traditional dance who love seeing work that local theaters have never presented before. Under Tim Plegge’s artistic leadership, the company’s 28 dancers focus on suprising their audience and their partners: internationally renowned choreographers, artists in residence, guest artists, and visiting ensembles invited by the company’s talent scout, Bruno Heynderickx. Q's task: develop and guide the company’s visual communication.

THE CONCEPT

The Hessian State Ballet also surprises itself. It is constantly evolving, always searching for creative collaboration and new concepts in all art forms. To complement the company’s creative approach, we created a system of visual communication that evolves with each new season of dance. Only the logotype remains constant.

CORPORATE DESIGN

In the logotype, a typographic intervention moves the word “Ballet” to the front, so it does not fall behind the superior words “Hessian” and “State”. The staged letters convey the visual essence of the logotype. Additional visual elements are unnecessary. The logotype choreography is easily remembered and legible despite its abstraction.

INTERACTIVE DESIGN

The Q-designed responsive website presents complete information about the Hessian State Ballet’s performance schedules, production details, choreographer credits, and dancer bios.

EDITORIAL DESIGN

Once a year, the Hessian State Ballet publishes a magazine about its current and upcoming performances. Q creates the magazine concept with a mixture of structured design and expressive, free-flowing elements.

PRINT DESIGN

Q also produces all Hessian State Ballet printed materials. Because the company’s programs include visiting artists and guest appearances, we receive text and images from many different sources. Our strong design approach brings all this diversity together for consistent presentation in all media – making the Hessian State Ballet visible as the primary messenger.
